A Story about the Surveillance State, Hyperconnectivity & Disinformation
April 25, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, KUY 410
John Gagnon's presentation is about how U.S. post-primacy led to post-truth while drawing lines of connection to governmental interests in countering perceived threats of social disintegration, virtual mobilization, and political resistance. Amid the United States鈥 descent into post-primacy, strategists from military, intelligence, and federal law enforcement sectors began calling for greater investment in domestic surveillance, enhanced propaganda through strategic manipulation of public opinion, and increased
controls over information content and information flow.
Gagnon's talk illuminates the growing impact of weaponized rhetorical operations across the U.S. and demonstrates how the weaponization of rhetorical knowledge is impacting discourses, values, and ideas in ongoing struggles over culture, meaning, and
identity in daily life.
