History Distinguished Speaker Series
"Clio and Culture: How to Narrate the Whole of History"
Felipe Fern脙隆ndez-Armesto, William P. Reynolds Professor of History, University of Notre Dame

芒鈧揟he past is a mess. Providence, progress, dialectic, teleology, determinism of various kinds 芒鈧 every attempt to fit it into a simple story has failed. Efforts seem doomed to escape from the constraints of the historian脗麓s own time and circumstances into an objective perspective, or to climb to the cosmic crow脗麓s nest and see our past in a single glance. The lecturer proposes a new approach 芒鈧 comparing humans with other cultural organisms 芒鈧 and argues that the result is a distinctive and surprisingly concise yet comprehensive narrative.芒鈧
