Seminar: The free trade area of Asia Pacific: Opportunities and challenges

September 18, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Mānoa Campus, 1601 East-West Road, John A. Burns Hall, Room 3121/3125 (3rd floor)

In recent years, several regional superpowers have made it clear that a tougher trade protectionism will be their priority, which presents a challenge to the progress of Asia-Pacific regional economic integration. Should the Asia-Pacific economies maintain the cooperative momentum reflected in the proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP)? This has become one of the most important research topics of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Dr. Li will discuss the social-economic benefits and costs that APEC economies may face in realizing the FTAAP, and put forward several feasible strategic policy recommendations.

Dr. Wentao Li is an associate professor and full-time researcher with the China APEC Academy and APEC Study Center of Nankai University. His research projects focus on APEC芒鈧劉s progress towards the 1994 Bogor Goals and the development of free-trade agreements in Asia Pacific, such as the FTAAP, Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Many of his policy suggestions have been adopted by China芒鈧劉s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Commerce.
