Peace Day Hawai`i 2016
September 21, 7:00pm - 8:00pmMānoa Campus, UH Manoa Art Auditorium, UH Urban Garden Center, Pearl City & UH Manoa College of Education
In 2007, Hawai`i House Bill 345 was voted into law as Act 23, declaring "September 21st of each year shall be known and recognized as 芒鈧揚eace Day芒鈧 to promote peace programs, improve international relations, and increase educational awareness of peace.芒鈧
Hawaii thus became the first state in the United States to join more than 200 countries in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Peace and Non-Violence. Since then, each year, volunteers from community groups, professional organizations, educational institutions, artists, musicians and government service representatives unite to show solidarity towards attaining peace throughout our lives and the world on this and everyday.
This year, the Peace Day Hawai`i 2016 events are spread across the week. The celebration will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 9am - 2pm at the beautiful grounds of the Urban Garden Center (UGC) in Pearl City, O芒鈧劉ahu. Throughout the day, participants will find time to leisurely explore the many gardens at the UGC; learn ways to live a healthy and peace-filled life; discover ways to make a difference for peace through viewing the exhibits, 4 Mastergardener workshops, presentations of 50+ peace and sustainability organizations; and enjoy local musicians, acrobatics and dance groups from our community with guest musician John Dumas. A short program beginning at noon will invite participants to learn more about Peace Day Hawai`i and honor this year芒鈧劉s Distinguished Peacemaker Awardees - Senator Susanne Chun-Oakland and Clifford & JoAnn Hirayasu.
