Overcoming Zombie Content and Emotional Resistance to Learning
November 13, 1:30pm - 2:45pm
Mānoa Campus, Kuykendall 106
Like zombies, instructors under the pressure of content coverage may march inexorably on to the next topic, hoping students will intuit critical skills along with content. How we engage with students provides us with the opportunity to build upon and perhaps correct prior ideas and beliefs that they may have.
This session will consider the gap between expert and novice thinking. Participants will identify bottlenecks and misconceptions in their own classes and ways to anticipate and re-channel resistance to move students away from emotional snap judgements towards disciplinary ways of thinking.
