"On O'ahu: Two Views," an exhibition of contemporary photographs

March 1, 2015 - April 10, 2015
Mānoa Campus, Art Building, The Art Gallery at the University of Hawai'i at M脛聛noa

"On O'ahu: Two Views" features the works by artist photographers Phil Jung and Joseph Maida who each present a unique view of the island of O芒鈧渁hu. Jung is currently teaching at the Department of Art + Art History, University of Hawai芒鈧渋 at M脛聛noa (UHM). Jung芒鈧劉s half of the exhibition is titled "O芒鈧渁hu." Maida芒鈧劉s is titled "New Natives." Maida is also an Intersections Visiting Artist.

Phil Jung offers an exploration into the island of O芒鈧渁hu芒鈧劉s extremely complex social system. The cultural identity, wealth distribution and social mobility of Hawaii's residents frequently contrasts with its idyllic backdrop. Staying clear of common mainstream assumptions, Jung uses his camera to explore the relationship between the people who inhabit O芒鈧渁hu and the landscape that binds them all together. His photos act as a loose narrative of contemporary culture in Hawai芒鈧渋.

"New Natives" is a group of portraits of aspiring male models of mixed ethnicity and race from Hawai芒鈧渋. From New York, Joseph Maida scouted the subjects through social media before photographing them in their local terrain around the metropolis of Honolulu. Drawing from Hawaii芒鈧劉s royal history as well as its Eastern and Western influences, this series examines visions of masculinity, identity, and sexuality, which upend conventional hegemony on multiple registers.
