Sounds of the Madeiran Rajao & Machete: A Lecture-Demo on Madeiran Music Tradi

In 1879 the SS Ravenscraig arrived in Honolulu Harbor carrying 423 Portuguese immigrants from Funchal, Madeira along with the Madeiran machete and Madeiran rajao, parent instruments of the 鈥榰kulele. Through the music traditions of Madeira and the woodworking skills of Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes, and Jose do Esp铆rito Santo, the 鈥榰kulele was born. Join us as Robert Moniz and Robert Moritz, two of Madeira's foremost educators and musicians, share the origins of the parent instruments of the 鈥榰kulele. Learn about Madeiran musical practices that are the precursors of Hawaiian 'ukulele, including tuning, strumming, picking techniques, and singing styles.
