February 13, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 106 Events Room
In this workshop, Dr. Nalani Butler will discuss how to infuse diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) into experiential learning in the classroom by working with community partners and through student mentorship. She will engage instructors who are looking to create opportunities to fund classroom engagement and academic research. She will also reflect on her personal experiences by discussing her work with the Special Olympics and in Sport Diplomacy. Presented by Nalani Butler Professor, Kennesaw State University Dr. Butler is currently an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, U.S.A, co-author of Social Issues in Sport (4th edition), and a DEI Consultant. Dr. Butler received her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. During her tenure in Knoxville, Dr. Butler volunteered her time with the Korean Foundation for Next Generation in Sports Talent Program (NEST) and also volunteered as a graduate student representative for the Center of Sport, Peace, and Society (CSPS) who works with the U.S. State Department on issue involving Sport Diplomacy. Her time volunteering was spent facilitating communication between people from different cultures by using sport as a tool to connect those from diverse backgrounds. Dr. Butler鈥檚 experiences as an athlete, in combination with engaging the scholarship of sport studies and work within sport organizations, has helped her to shape a scholarly-professional trajectory focused on exploring sport and inequality locally and globally and to explore the myriad ways sport can be employed. When she is not in the classroom, she spends her time biking, hiking, or paddle boarding.
