NorthStar: A Starting Place for Digital Literacy

March 20, 5:00pm - 6:00pm
West Oʻahu Campus, Zoom

Speakers: 鈥婼tacey Aldrich, State Librarian, Hawai驶i State Public Library System and Sandy Yamamoto, Library Media Specialist, Kapolei High School. Thriving in the 2000s requires the ability to navigate the digital world. A study done by the Hawai驶i Workforce Development Council during the pandemic revealed that 17% of the local community is not digital literate. So, where can people start? Northstar Digital Literacy. This session will introduce you to the computer program, which provides resources and assessments for those seeking to develop the computer and information literacy skills that are needed for employment, higher education, and daily life. You'll hear about two local approaches to launching and using this program. The session will highlight how the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is using it to support the community in building tools and opportunities. The session will also showcase how Kapolei High School implemented this resource to support their students' journey to college and career readiness, which is a necessary skill for students no matter their chosen post-high school path. Prior to becoming the State Librarian of Hawaii, Aldrich served as the Deputy Secretary for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries in Pennsylvania and State Librarian of California. Yamamoto has earned her National Board Certification and is currently working on Google Educator certification. While at Kapolei High, Yamamoto's library was recognized as a National School Library Media Program of the Year (SLMPY) in 2006.
