Trace and Memory: Memorial Photography in Modern Japan
March 9, 3:00pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Moore Hall 258
Public Lecture by Prof. Morihiro Satow, Doshisha University. In modern Japan, memorial photographs have played a significant role in funerals, memorial services, and the everyday lives of the bereaved. Typically, a portrait photograph taken during the sitter's lifetime is transformed into a memorial photograph after their death. This lecture theoretically and historically examines the function of memorial photography in modern Japan, comparing it to examples from other cultures such as Europe, Mexico, and Brazil. This event is presented both in-person and via zoom. To register for the zoom webinar, please go to: https://hawaii.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uB0TNQjdRWOI1FtN6oCW3Q
