Dynamic Human-Environment Interactions in Island Ecosystems: The Contribution of Archaeology

Professor Patrick Kirch

Professor Kirch will draw upon several case studies from Polynesia to illustrate how archaeologists working collaboratively with natural scientists have elucidated the ways in which human societies in the region have interacted with their island ecosystems over time spans of centuries and millennia. As human populations have modified formerly pristine island environments, they have also had to adapt their societies and practices of land use and resource management. Professor Kirch, born and raised in Hawai驶i, taught at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1989-2014. He returned home and joined the UH 惭腻苍辞补 faculty in 2019.
