ORE seminar: Rapid Resilient Reefs for Coastal Defense (R3D)
September 14, 3:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Watanabe Hall 112 & Zoom (see description for meeting ID and passcode)
Dr. Ben Jones Director of Ocean Science and Technology Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) University of Hawai鈥榠 In June of 2022, five laboratories at the University of Hawai鈥榠 (UH) began an ambitious effort to engineer a living coral reef designed to protect coastlines from storms and sea-level rise. Led by the Applied Research Laboratory, Rapid Resilient Reefs for coastal Defense (R3D) is a collaboration between UH, the University of California San Diego, Florida Atlantic University and Makai Ocean Engineering. As an inherently multi-disciplinary challenge, the R3D team spans three key technical areas鈥攂ase structure design, ecosystem engineering, and adaptive biology. The first area, led by the Huang Laboratory in Ocean and Resources Engineering, will combine state of the art techniques in engineering design with multi-scale wave-flume and in-situ testing to develop a distributed breakwater system inspired by fringing coral reefs. The second technical area, ecosystem engineering鈥攍ed by the Geometric Ecology Lab at the Hawai鈥榠 Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), leverages recent advances in high-resolution additive manufacturing and bioprinting to create realistically complex habitats for reef dwelling organisms. Finally, an adaptive biology component, led by the ToBo Lab at HIMB, will build upon decades of research in coral husbandry and recent advances in the aquaria industry to develop thermally resilient corals while providing engineered solutions to cool and nourish the reef during acute heating events. Location Information **this seminar will be held both in person (Watanabe Hall 112) and over Zoom** Meeting ID: 961 6222 2366 Passcode: OREseminar https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/96162222366
