September 1, 5:30pm - 7:30pmMānoa Campus, Ka Waiwai ma Mōʻiliʻili 1110 University Ave, Honolulu, HI 96826
Calling all literature lovers! Come celebrate the debut of Ask the Brindled, an award-winning collection of poetry by ʻŌiwi poet and educator Noʻu Revilla. Noʻu Revilla’s Ask the Brindled won the 2021 National Poetry Series. Her poetry has been featured in Ours Poetica, Beloit, ANMLY, Lit Hub, Poetry, and the Library of Congress. Her work has also been adapted for theatrical productions in Aotearoa and art exhibitions in the Honolulu Museum of Art and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2021 Noʻu won the Omnidawn Broadside Poetry prize. She is an assistant professor at the University of Hawaiʻi-ԴDz, where she teaches creative writing with an emphasis on ʻŌiwi literature, spoken word, and decolonial poetics. This event will feature performances by Noʻu, Jocelyn Ng, Brandy Nālani McDougall, Alohalani Brown, Māhealani Ahia, Kahala Johnson, Lyz Soto, and DJ Mermaid. Join us for pūpū, raffle prizes & author signing at Ka Waiwai in Mōʻiliʻili. Book sales will be organized by Native Books. Ask the Brindled explores themes of desire and intergenerational healing through the cultural figure of moʻo, or shapeshifting water protectors who, for Noʻu, are models of transformation and erotic power in Hawaiian culture. From over 1,600 submissions, Ask the Brindled won the 2021 National Poetry Series and was described by NPS judge Rick Barot as “a complex testimony...of audacity and song.” Revilla is the first Hawaiian woman and first poet from Hawaiʻi to receive the NPS prize.
