Pili i Ke Kanaka: Indigenous Social Sciences Speaker Series | Dr. Noenoe Silva

February 15, 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Zoom

Dr. Silva argues that many Kト]aka worked to perpetuate ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi in the years 1939 to 1945. She will analyze some speeches and articles by Lorrin P. Thurston, owner of the Honolulu Advertiser and son Lorrin Andrews Thurston, along with other content published in his paper in order to show what our kナォpuna were up against. Then give some examples of the real work that many Kト]aka did, including teaching classes in ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi, establishing classes in ハサナ考elo in K-12 schools and writing content for the last remaining nナォpepa ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi, Ka Hoku O Hawaii. Their actions added to the numbers of people that continue to speak, write and compose mele in ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi, enough that Kawena Pukui could do many interviews in ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi in the 1950s and 60s and that Larry Kimura could begin language reclamation and revival by airing live ハサナ考elo Hawaiハサi interviews on the radio in 1972.
