The Daodejing and the Mulamadhyamakakarika: Making sense of Ineffability

Many texts claim that there are some things that are ineffable, and argue that they are so. Of course, the texts must say something about them to do this. Hence the texts seem committed to the contradictory nature of these objects. In this talk I will look at two texts which find themselves in this situation: the Daodejing and the Mulamadhyamakakarika. After a brief introduction to paraconsistent logic (logic which allows for contradictions), we will then see how, using this machinery, one can make sense of the strange thought that there are objects which are both effable and ineffable.
