SCEP Live Online Concert Series: Laurie Rubin

Mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin has received high praise from The New York Times chief classical music critic Anthony Tommasini, who wrote that she possesses 鈥渃ompelling artistry,鈥 鈥渃ommunicative power,鈥 and that her voice displays 鈥渆arthy, rich, and poignant qualities.鈥

In 2012, Seven Stories Press published Rubin鈥檚 memoir, Do You Dream in Color? Insights From a Girl Without Sight. Recounting her experiences from childhood through the rise of her career as an opera singer, Rubin shows how her determination to continually surpass and redefine others鈥 expectations.

Rubin has performed a number of operatic roles, including the role of the voice/witch in Lisa Bielawa鈥檚 award-winning, episodic TV Opera 鈥淰ireo, the spiritual biography of a witch鈥檚 accuser,鈥 broadcast on KCET鈥檚 Art Bound program. Laurie made her Ravinia debut in concert with Frederica Von Stade in September 2015.

She was also the title role in Rossini鈥檚 La Cenerentola, Mrs. Noye in Britten鈥檚 鈥淣oye鈥檚 Fludde,鈥 under the baton of Dr. Samuel Wong, the lead role of Karen in Gordon Beeferman鈥檚 The Rat Land at New York City Opera鈥檚 VOX Festival, Penelope in Monteverdi鈥檚 The Return of Ulysses at the Greenwich Music Festival and Elle in Poulenc鈥檚 The Human Voice at the Greenwich Music Festival and the Ohana Arts Festival. Ms. Rubin has also performed concerts of new music with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She has collaborated with and premiered works by composers John Harbison, Gabriela Lena Frank, Keeril Makan, Bruce Adolphe, Noam Sivan and Gordon Beeferman.

The fall concert series is a joint effort between UH Manoa Outreach College, UH M?noa Music Department,the East-West Center Arts Program, and Friends of Manoa Library.
