October 31, 3:00pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 410
In聽鈥淭ranslating Palestine鈥澛燳ousef Aljamal discusses how he does his work in the world to reach an international audience about what is happening in Palestine. Many stories that exist in Arabic are not available in other languages. His task as a translator is to make some of these available to non-Arabic speakers. He is especially interested in stories that tell of everyday people struggling to survive; stories of families; stories of prisoners; and stories of refugees. These stories keep the memory of Palestine and those who have told them alive. In this talk, he discusses the work he has done in narrating his family鈥檚 tragedies, and in translating the testimonies that make up聽Dreaming of Freedom: Palestinian Child Prisoners Speak, The Prisoners Diaries,聽and a forthcoming book on Palestinian hunger strikers.
