Seminar: From Artistry to Ethnography in Early Japanese Photographs

This is a public seminar from Dr. David Odo, Director of Student Programs & Research Curator of University Collections Initiatives at the Harvard Art Museums.

When is a photograph a souvenir?脗聽A work of art?脗聽Anthropological data?脗聽How can tourist photographs, produced to appeal to foreign visitors of 芒鈧揺xotic芒鈧 lands, become scientific data? Based on his studies of the脗聽Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology芒鈧劉s collection of early photographs of Japan脗聽at Harvard University,脗聽David脗聽Odo, author of脗聽The Journey of 芒鈧揂 Good Type芒鈧: From Artistry to Ethnography in Early Japanese脗聽Photographs,脗聽will discuss this complicated terrain. The collection芒鈧漜omprised of highly aesthetic photographs expensively printed and painstakingly colored by hand in the 19th century芒鈧漜onstitutes a fascinating example of how 芒鈧揳rt芒鈧 and 芒鈧搒cience芒鈧 can intersect in a museum.脗聽脗聽
