Resilience: A special session with Mervlyn Kitashima

Mervlyn Kitashima, a participant in Emmy Werner芒鈧劉s seminal Kaua脢禄i Longitudinal Study on Resilience, will speak on October 30 at UH M脛聛noa.

Mervlyn , who is the Parents & Alumni Relations Administrator for Kamehameha Schools, grew up in poverty in the 1950s and 1960s on Kaua脢禄i, and, despite having experienced multiple risk factors early in her life, was identified as being successful and accomplished at age 40. She will share her insights about resilience and children typically known as 芒鈧揳t risk,芒鈧 but with her counter-perspective of children 芒鈧揳t promise.芒鈧

Mervlyn will share her personal experiences, and, with educators in mind, discuss the ways in which schools and teachers can provide the protective factors that make a difference in the lives of children 芒鈧揳t promise.芒鈧 Those present will learn, through her presentation, how to support and affect positive change when working with children, schools, and families.
