April 8, 5:00pm - 7:00pmMānoa Campus, Art Auditorium
Born in West Sussex, Mark Ravenhill graduated from the University of Bristol in 1987. In 1996 his first play "Shopping and F***ing" was produced at the Royal Court Theatre. It was subsequently widely translated and produced all over the world. Notable productions included those at the Schaub脙录hne Berlin, the Market Theatre Johannesburg, and the New York Theatre Workshop. From 2001 to 2005, Mark was an associate artist at the National Theatre, London, which produced his plays "Mother Clap芒鈧劉s Mollyhouse," "Citizenship," and "Nation" (adapted from Terry Pratchett). His play "The Cut" starring Sir Ian McKellen played at the Donmar Theatre in 2005. From 2011 to 2013, Mark was resident playwright at the Royal Shakespeare Company, producing a new version of Brecht芒鈧劉s "Galileo" and an original play inspired by Voltaire芒鈧劉s "Candide." His opera "Elysium" with composer Rolf Wallin was produced by the Norwegian Opera in 2016.
From 2005 to 2010, Mark wrote a regular column for "The Guardian" and appeared regularly on the BBC芒鈧劉s "Newsnight Review" and "Saturday Review."
He is also the co-creator of the ITV sitcom "Vicious" (featuring Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi).
This public conversation will touch upon key influences on Mark Ravenhill's work, the gradual shift from a queer "In-Yer-Face Theatre" to a critique of neoliberalism and the "War on Terror" in his plays, and the changed political and cultural landscape of the UK and beyond.
