TALK: The transformation of Surabaya芒鈧劉s pro-poor shelter efforts

January 17, 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Moore 319

The city of Surabaya in Indonesia counts as a pioneer of pro-poor shelter efforts in the developing world for its effective upgrading of urban poor settlements.

This presentation synthesizes multiple strands of a continuing, decade-long research on Surabaya芒鈧劉s settlement upgrading interventions toward urban poverty alleviation.

It will illustrate how, with the 芒鈧搇ocal芒鈧 emerging as the primary locus of governance and planning in a heavily decentralized and democratized post-authoritarian Indonesia, the city芒鈧劉s approach to improving/providing/designing shelter and services to the poor has also transformed, albeit less encouragingly
