International Diplomacy: Stories From Behind the Scenes

October 14, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Mānoa Campus, John A. Burns Hall, Room 3012

Gi Won Post will talk about her 38 years as a foreign service spouse, married to a career foreign service officer, the late Ronald Post. She will share her thoughts about what it takes to play many roles in support of all aspects of U.S. diplomacy and how it can make a difference.

Gi Won was born in Taegu, South Korea. Unhappy with her career prospects as a woman in Korea in the late 1960s, she came to the U.S. where she pursued a graduate degree and worked at George Washington University and the World Bank. In 1973, she married foreign service officer Ron Post and they were assigned to the U.S. Embassy in war-torn Laos where they served until they were evacuated at gun-point in 1975. Assignments in Korea, Japan, Austria, Thailand, Burma, Hawaii and the Philippines followed. During the Posts芒鈧劉 service years, they witnessed three bloodless military coups in Thailand, the assassination of a Korean president, and clashes between Aung San Suu Kyi and the military junta in Burma.

In addition to supporting Ron芒鈧劉s foreign service mission, Gi Won has worked in information management positions in the U.S. Defense Department, as an analyst at the International Atomic Energy Agency, as a university Korean history teacher, and as a consultant on cross-cultural perspectives and management training.
