Radio Detection of Ultra-high Energy Particles & NASA's ANITA Project
April 28, 3:15pm - 4:45pmMānoa Campus, Watanabe 112
Prof. Peter Gorham (UH Manoa) will speak on Radio Detection of Ultra-high Energy Particles & NASA's ANITA Project
We review briefly and selectively the history of the renewed efforts to detect and characterize of ultra-high energy cosmic particles via radio impulses that arise from their interaction with target matter in the form of the Moon, the Earth's atmosphere, and the Antarctic cryosphere. Much of this effort traces its origin back to the Armenian-born Russian physicist Gurgen Askaryan in the 1960's, whose predictions regarding ultra-high energy particles and their interactions were prescient. More recently, these predictions, and accelerator-based confirmations enabled UH to develop and lead the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon mission, which is now preparing for its fourth Antarctic flight later this year. We will report on recent developments for ANITA, and plans for the future.
