Soviet Children in World War II, part 1

The UH Russian Studies committee is hosting a three-day workshop on campus. The second part of the workshop will be presentations on the experience of Soviet children during World War II. On the first panel, Professor Marina Balina (Illinois Wesleyan University) will present “Soviet Childhood during the Great Patriotic War: Sons of the Regiments, Ostarbeiter, and War Orphans in Contemporary Russian Literature” and Professor Polina Barskova (Hampshire College) will present “Siege Childhood Written for Adults: The Curious Cases of Leonid Panteleev’s Short Stories and the Book of the Blockade.” In the second panel, Professor Lisa Kirschenbaum (West Chester University) will present “Resilient Childhood and the Great Patriotic War” and Professor Julie deGraffenried (Baylor University) will present “Loving the (Mother)Land: The Natural World, Children’s Culture, and the Great Patriotic War.”
