芒鈧揈xtended Personhood芒鈧滱n Exhibition of Postcards from Hawai芒鈧渋 Between 189
February 11, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Henke 325
The phrase 芒鈧揺xtended personhood芒鈧 refers to the people depicted on postcards, a number of which were derived from photographs made in Honolulu during the 1880s. Once imaged on postcards, these mostly Hawaiian subjects became mass commodities in a visual economy of images that linked Hawai芒鈧渋 with America and Europe. From mass production and sale in Hawai芒鈧渋, the postcards became individual or private objects for the purchasers and the ultimate recipients. The exhibition invites the viewer to consider messages from three sources: the images; handwritten messages to intended recipients (or the absence of such messages); and printed captions on the backs of the cards which detail intended colonial messages about the images.
Deborah Waite is a Professor of Art and Art History at UH M脛聛noa, whose research interests include art from Melanesia, in particular, the Solomon Islands.
