H脜聧k脜芦le芒鈧渁 Worldwide Voyage: Island Wisdom and Global Connections in Ethnomathematics

Speaker: Dr. Linda Furuto

Description: H脜聧k脜芦le芒鈧渁, our Star of Gladness, began as a vision of reviving the legacy of exploration, courage, reverence, and compassion that brought the first Polynesians to the archipelago of Hawai芒鈧渋. The mission of the Worldwide Voyage (2013-2017) is to M脛聛lama Honua, care for Island Earth, by bridging ancient and modern wisdom for a more sustainable world.

H脜聧k脜芦le芒鈧渁 is a vehicle to explore research, theory, and praxis, including equitable, high quality mathematics education that serves to re-empower diverse populations through experiential, real-world applications. We steward this gift and kuleana to m脛聛lama honua together for future generations.

About Dr. Furuto: Dr. Linda H.L. Furuto was born and raised in Hau芒鈧渦la, O芒鈧渁hu. She is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Hawai芒鈧渋 at M脛聛noa, and was previously an Associate Professor of Mathematics at UH West O芒鈧渁hu. Research interests include: quantitative methodology, mathematics achievement, ethnomathematics, and educational access and equity. Dr. Furuto received the 2010 Pacific Business News芒鈧劉 Top Forty Under 40 Award, 2011 UH Board of Regents Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Teaching, and 2012 UH Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching. She is humbled to be engaged in H脜聧k脜芦le芒鈧渁芒鈧劉s Worldwide Voyage from 2013-2017.
