Closing the Loop: Practical Applications for CORE Competencies Assessment

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) has specified written communication, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy and oral communication as the five core competencies needed for students to “be successful at school, at work, and in their private and civic lives.”

This final edition of the Spring 2015 GEO/CTE series explores the “Big Five” and ways in which instructors can identify and enhance the core competencies in their classrooms. We will also be providing information about Mānoa’s current ssessment of the five competencies and ways in which some departments are “closing the loop” regarding these “higher- order intellectual skills.”

Faculty presenters will also present ways to:
• Use Quantitative Reasoning in the non-STEM classroom
• Use writing to learn in STEM courses
