4th Annual Ho脢禄olaule脢禄a at Ka M脛聛la o Niuhelewai

It芒鈧劉s been four years since the start of Honolulu Community College芒鈧劉s Ka M脛聛la o Niuhelewai (the garden of Niuhelewai) and the kalo (taro) is ready for harvest. Every April, the campus celebrates the m脛聛la with the campus芒鈧劉 annual Ho脢禄olaule脢禄a.

芒鈧揔a M脛聛la o Niuhelewai, has been an instrumental hands-on venue for students, faculty, staff and the community in supporting the Hawaiian understanding of sustainable m脛聛lama 脢禄脛聛ina application for producing food for Hawai脢禄i,芒鈧 shares Mark Alapaki Luke, Hawaiian studies instructor and chair of K脜芦lana Hawai脢禄i, Hawaiian Programs Division.

Event participants will enjoy various food items prepared in the imu, kalo (taro) to ku脢禄i 脢禄ai (pound poi), mele (music) and other hands on activities: 芒鈧渁ha (sennit cordage) making, lei l脛聛芒鈧溍劼 (k脛芦 or ti leaf) lei making, and k脜聧nane game (resembling checkers).

In keeping with the sustainability theme everyone is encouraged to bring their own reusable plate or container, beverage cup or bottle, and utensils for their lunch. Limited paper goods will be available to maintain m脛聛lama 脢禄脛聛ina (caring for the land/earth) and alleviate the trash in the landfill.
