芒鈧揚ublic Attitudes and Family Policies in China芒鈧
GUO Jing, School of Social Work, UHM
ABOUT THE TALK: Family policy is a broad research topic, which can include family planning, child care, family leave policy and so forth. This talk will focus on China芒鈧劉s family planning policy, which commonly known as the one-child policy. On Nov. 15, 2013, the Chinese government announced that it would loosen its one-child policy. The new regulations will allow couples in which at least one parent is an only child to have two offspring. Xinhua, China芒鈧劉s official news agency, said the reform was designed to 芒鈧搒teadily adjust and improve family-planning policies.芒鈧 Even thought it is commonly known as one-child policy, the family planning policies have been complicated in China.
The talk will first provide a historical review of the family-planning policies in China since 1950s while focusing on the one-child policy since 1979. Public attitudes and cultural norms towards family formation, gender relationship, and socio-economic development in China will be integrated into the review of the one-child policy. Then, it will present an update on the new reform and its implementation since 2014. Based on media survey reviews, some of emerging public attitudes toward the one-child policy in current China will be discussed.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Jing Guo (Ph.D. UC Berkeley) is an assistant professor in the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Guo芒鈧劉s work centers on comparative social welfare research in areas affecting the well-being of children and families. Specifically, her research focuses on three primary areas: a) comparative family policy; b) (im)migration and child education; and c) social policy and social services in China. Dr. Guo has taught social welfare policy courses across BSW, MSW and PhD programs in the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work.
