Vietnamese director Ngo Quang Hai's first feature film is the story of Pao, a young ethnic Hmong woman who sets off to find her birth mother leads her into a world of secrets and double lives. The magnificent mountain ranges of Northwest Viet Nam, engulfed year-round in an immense veil of fog, provide a rich cinematic setting for this vivid and moving film. The movie stars acclaimed Vietnamese actress, Do Thi Hai Yen, known for her roles in "The Quiet American" (US), "Vertical Ray of the Sun" (France), and "Song of the Stork" (Singapore) among other films. 'Pao's Story' is a contemplative coming-of-age tale about letting go of resentments based on childhood memories, as multiple revelations alter her perception of the past. Pao’s Story won Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography at Viet Nam's 2006 National Film Awards (The Golden Kites). The film was also submitted as Viet Nam's official selection to the Best Foreign Film category at the 2006 Academy Awards. -Ronnie Sheib, Variety
