"The Return of Benjamin Lay," starring Mark Povinelli and Talkback with Marcus Rediker & Mark Povinelli / Mark Povinelli, American Stage, Television, and Movie Actor / Marcus Rediker, Dai Ho Chun Chair in the College of Arts, Languages, & Letters, University of Hawaiʻi at ԴDz / A dramatic reading of The Return of Benjamin Lay, a play by Marcus Rediker and Naomi Wallace about one of the most remarkable 18th century revolutionaries and abolitionists, will be performed by Mark Povinelli, the star of its smash London premiere. Benjamin Lay was a shepherd, a prophet, a sailor, a Quaker, and a soul of fire. A four-foot tall “Little David,” he confronted slavery at a time when few had the courage or the faith to persevere. This one-man reading “has something to say about our current times of modern slavery, prejudice and ignorance.” A talkback featuring Marcus Rediker and Mark Povinelli will follow the performance.
