Diplomat and Special Agent. From Kailua to the Foreign Service
August 30, 3:00pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Moore Hall, Room: 258
Join us for our first Careers in Asia-Pacific Affairs webinar series with Lawrence “Larry” Chun. During this talk, Mr. Chun will discuss how growing up in Hawaii and being an Asian American has served him in a unique career field that encompasses international diplomacy and federal law enforcement. He will tell the story of his journey to joining the Foreign Service, explain the training that is involved with the job, and the intangible skills that he thinks many people develop while living in Hawaii that are necessary to succeed when working abroad. Originally from Kailua, Larry Chun graduated from Maryknoll High School and earned his undergraduate degree from Portland State University in Economics and Business Management. He has worked in a number of jobs in the public and private sectors before joining the Foreign Service. In his current role as a Special Agent in the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), Mr. Chun supports DSS' mission to lead worldwide security and law enforcement efforts to advance U.S. foreign policy and safeguard national security interests. He has investigated crimes ranging from passport fraud to international kidnapping, protected the U. S. Secretary of State, and served as an Assistant Regional Security Officer in Mali. Careers in Asia-Pacific Affairs (CAPA) is a cross-Center/NRC initiative to prepare UH students for careers that require knowledge of Asia-Pacific, in areas such as, but not limited to, non-profit, business, government, and education. CAPA is sponsored by Department of Asian Studies, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Center for Indo-Pacific Affairs, Center for Japanese Studies, and Center for Pacific Island Studies.
